According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and woman and accounts for approximately one out of every four deaths in the United States. So when heart disease strikes, it can sometimes be devastating for those who suffer from it and their families. That’s why Combined Insurance says that February, American Heart Month, is an ideal time for people to assess their insurance needs and consider the value and protection provided by supplemental illness, critical care and disability insurance.
“Many people, even those with good primary health insurance plans, lack the additional level of protection they need when a major illness such as heart disease or a heart attack strikes,” says Jim Coleman, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Combined Insurance. “That’s why we encourage people to take some time during February to look at their existing insurance coverage and assess where protection gaps might exist.”
Coleman adds that in addition to the emotional toll, unexpected illnesses and long-term recoveries can often create financial burdens for patients and their families. In fact, it’s not unusual for families in these circumstances to significantly deplete their emergency funds and savings accounts. Supplemental health insurance can help fill financial gaps and provide peace of mind by providing benefits that can be used to help cover some of the unexpected costs related to treating and recovering from a major illness or medical event, such as a heart attack.
How Supplemental Insurance Can Help
Combined Insurance, a leading provider of individual supplemental accident, disability, health and life insurance products, and an ACE Group company, offers a variety of flexible supplemental health insurance policies. Some provide specified daily cash benefits in the event of hospital stays and even outpatient care. Because the cash benefit is paid directly to the insured, it can be used to help with co-pays and other out-of-pocket medical expenses, associated transportation costs, or even routine household expenses.
Other Combined Insurance plans, such as Critical Care Protector, provide a defined lump sum benefit upon the diagnosis of one of specified major illnesses. These policies cover a range of serious illnesses and conditions for those that qualify. The company also offers disability insurance, which provides a monthly cash benefit for policyholders that become disabled and are unable to work.
